Steam locomotives including Locomotion No. 1, Rocket, Mallard and Evening Star will appear on a new set of stamps celebrating the history of the UK’s railway network.
It is now over 200 years since the world’s first steam railway locomotive made its maiden voyage along a primitive plateway in South Wales – in 1804 Richard Trevithick’s high-pressure steam locomotive successfully hauled a loaded train a distance of nine miles at an average speed of two mph.
Railway fans have launched a £40,000 fundraising appeal to see a Victorian steam locomotive hauling passenger carriages for the first time in 75 years.
